Arcus2016

Arcus Association for Community Living is an organization that provides support and specialized care to people who have severe physical challenges, high medical needs, and intellectual challenges. They have both residential and day program services as well as other support resources.

Canada Summer Job (CSJ) students Samantha D., Manrose, Mackenzie, and Samantha O. are spending their summer working with clients in the day program at Arcus Association for Community Living. Their tasks include helping with activities that promote fun and interacting with the people in the program. When the students described the clients faces lighting up, the students themselves lit up with pride for the job they were doing at Arcus.

All of the students shared what their experience has been thus far. Samantha D. is finishing school to become a physical therapist. She explained how this experience has changed her life. She has developed a way to non-verbally communicate with the individuals in the program. The CSJ program has allowed her to step up and be a leader. Manrose is a pharmacy student and is grateful for the opportunity to work with a bracket of the population she would otherwise not have the opportunity to work with. It has opened her eyes up to a range of experiences. Mackenzie, who is studying Human Resources, spoke to how this experience has allowed her to build new relationships and has given her an experience to know different people that she would not normally interact with. Samantha O. is starting out her first year of school in the fall at Simon Fraser University studying Psychology. At first going into this program she was nervous as she did not have prior experience interacting with peoples with disability. She quickly found that she was easily able to create a connection with the individuals in the program and has learned that everyone has something that they can teach you. She has found that she is generally a happier and friendlier person since beginning the CSJ program.

Their supervisor explained how these students have display high energy and enthusiasm about the work that they are doing. They are incredibly dynamic and appreciative about the opportunity in front of them. Working in a job such as this one opens many doors and avenues that they can explore in their careers.

Thank you for inspiring me on our visit Samantha D., Manrose, Mackenzie, and Samantha O.!
