On Thursday, July 28th, I was honored to take part in the official launch of the Pitt Meadows – Maple Ridge Rainbow Sidewalk in honor of Pride which officially kicks off on Sunday, July 31st. As we continue to strive for and achieve equality, fairness, and rights for all LGBTQ+ residents of Pitt Meadows – Maple Ridge, we also must continue to create and promote spaces and opportunities for open and respectful dialogue. Equality for all LGBTQ+ residents is something which our communities must progressively work towards and open communication about the issues which are most commonly encountered by LGBTQ+ youths and adults, will be a step in the right direction to creating a more welcoming and accessible community.
With events such as the Pulse Nightclub Shooting on June 12th 2016, it can be hard not to be clouded by fear, hate and judgement over such a heinous act. It can be hard to comprehend how violence comes into this equation, and why are people dying over their rights and equalities, at the hands of other people’s hate and emotions. It is events such as those which may make us take a step backwards in terms of the progress of the LGBTQ+ movement. But our communities work together to move forward, creating monuments such as Pride Colored sidewalks, so that people may recognize our efforts in making Pitt Meadows – Maple Ridge a more open, welcoming and vibrant place to work, play and live.
Wishing everyone a happy Pride this BC long weekend!
