The Whonnock Community Association provides educational recreation and athletic facilities for the use of children in the community. They promote, encourage and assist the community to help develop community spirit and good citizenship. This summer they have two Canada Summer Jobs students working in their facilities.
Ellen is working with the preschool aged children by providing care and activities for them. She is currently attending university to become a teacher, which makes this job an asset to her future career. She is learning organizational skills that she can then use in her classroom as well as different tactics on how to interact with different types of children. This experience has made her more excited to become a teacher.
Robert just graduated from high school and is planning on obtaining post-secondary education in order to work in child and youth care. When he started working at Whonnock Community Association he was shy, but has now became immersed with the different experiences this job has provided for him. As a result he has witnessed growth in himself. He has learned leadership skills, communication skills, and how to deal with children. All of the skills he is learning he can carry forward to his future career, something he very grateful for.
Thank you to Ellen and Robert for the visit. Keep up the inspiring work in our communities!
